Professor Benjamin Burton is an accomplished academic and change-maker known for his work in mathematics and education. His passion for mathematics was ignited during his time at John Paul College, where he was encouraged by his teachers to participate in extracurricular activities like the International Mathematical Olympiad and the National Mathematics Summer School.
After earning degrees at The University of Queensland and completing his PhD at The University of Melbourne, focusing on computational knot theory, he became a professor at UQ. Benjamin's expertise covers geology and topology, combinatorics, information security, and finance.
As the Director of the National Mathematics Summer School and the Chief Coach for the International Olympiad in Informatics, he remains dedicated to solving problems in academia and supporting diversity, including women's rights and LGBTIAQ+ inclusion in the Australian Mathematical Society. He is a proud member of the LGBTIAQ+ UQ Ally Network and actively uses his platform as a professor to help create change.
